MINIMALLY INVASIVE PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY: CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO ICDAS 00-06 IN CHILDREN

COURSE OBJECTIVE

In the last two decades, there has been significant improvisations in the way of removing the carious lesions and fighting the menace and burden of severe early childhood caries. The standard protocol has undergone several modifications since beginning, more so because of increased demand from the parents for saving their child’s teeth and advances in material science & innovative equipment. Preventive strategies like CPP-ACP, Xylitols, Fluoride varnishes, Pit & fissure sealants, High strength and Resin modified premixed GIC capsules assists us in sealing the non cavitated lesions and preventing the caries process from very beginning in high-risk young children. Resin infiltration technique is best possible technique to mask those early white spots due to caries and on hypomineralized lesions. SDF and SMART allows us to not only treat those tiny tots more predictably and less invasively but also control the disease process. Chemomechanical caries removal allows us to remove infected dentin and maintain the vitality of the teeth by preserving the leathery and firm dentin. Hall’s technique allows us to place crowns without even preparing the tooth and acts as one of the best indirect pulp capping agents. Bioceramics can now be safely considered as a munificent entity which has changed the prognosis of many cases which were once considered deemed for invasive pulp canal treatments.

For better and simple understanding of this complex topic, we have divided this session into three parts in context to ICDAS grading and each session is in continuation. It is highly recommended to attend these three topics in continuity and sequentially for best of the understanding. Each part is amalgamation of brief didactics, understanding of concepts, scientific referencing, and series of clinical cases in form of images and videos including hands on demonstration.

Minimally invasive pediatric dentistry is not a luxury. It is something which we owe to our child patients and their parents. At the end, doing “too much” won’t help but “doing just enough” would do wonders to our tiny superstars.
